Optimizing for AI SEO and LLM Chatbots

Feb 25, 2026

How do I optimize my website for AI LLM chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini?

Optimizing for AI—often called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) or GAIO—is less about “tricking” an algorithm and more about becoming the most trustworthy, readable source for a machine. In 2026, AI chatbots don’t just “find” your site; they “interview” it.

The above was Gemini’s answer.

To optimize a website for AI LLMs like ChatGPT, publish clear, structured, authoritative content that directly answers specific questions, uses explicit definitions, is crawlable without JavaScript, and demonstrates real expertise.

This was ChatGPTs.

Here is mine. See above. I’m not going to argue with a machine about what it likes best.

The Wild West of GEO: Lessons from Early SEO and First-Mover Risks

Right now, we’re in the Wild West of LLM ‘Search’ optimization. It reminds me of when SEO services first launched and everyone was doing their best to hack the algorithm. I had a friend who was making $9K / mo. with Adsense when he was 22 years old, with a collection of terrible websites. Tiny print and massive ads. Very typical of the early SEO days when Adsense incentivized poor website quality. The problem was Google would update the algorithm and entire sub-niche industries would be lost. I would argue rightly so, but it does highlight the risk of action in a shifting environment. Sometimes first mover advantage means the first to get hit by sudden change:

I would suspect that sometimes the first movers get stuck in the wrong patterns and then are no longer able to shift with the times. Just Ask Jeeves.

The honest truth is no one really knows how AI SEO / GEO / LLM Optimization will change or work in the future. We can kind of guess how it’s working now, but my instinct here is that we’re in the GEO hacking phase. A lot of people will figure out something that works today, but then won’t work in two or three months when all the models update.

How can I future proof my GEO / AI SEO / LLM optimization strategy?

The best way to future proof your strategy is to:

  • Be Unique
  • Provide Useful Information
  • Be Genuine
  • Be Funny (everyone knows AI’s don’t have a sense of humor).

As you can see, I’m not against some hacking methods myself. See my other article on:

At the end of the day, I agree with the idea that each of us that is trying to drive results for our business and clients need to “be in the arena, doing things”. I wish everyone in the SEO / GEO space the best of luck, and may the best Top 10 list win 😉
